We have compiled a list of family-friendly activities and those days where you just need a break, whether it be eating or drinking, we’ve got just the things to do this month, perfect for those based in Birmingham, Solihull, Kings Heath, Moseley and surrounding areas!

Ikon Exhibition, Matthew Krishanu, A Murder of Crows – February – 10th March 2019

Dozens of Matthew Krishanu’s painted crows will be displayed throughout Ikon’s neo-gothic premises. Always painted singly and never in flight they appear almost anthropomorphic on their twin legs, whether looking directly at the viewer or stepping away.

Stilettos Book Club – 6th February 2019

Stilettos Network would like to invite you to join us for good food, good company and a glass or two over our current read. As chosen by our December Book Group, “Becoming Michelle Obama”.

Adam Kay – 6th February 2019

Award-winning comedian Adam Kay shares entries from his diaries as a junior doctor in this “electrifying” (Guardian) evening of stand-up and music.

Adult Jewellery Workshop: Make a silver ring with your loved one – 9th February 2019

In this workshop you will learn new skills to make a silver ring to take home with you. A perfect activity for yourself and a loved one, a great gift for a birthday or Valentines Day or a well deserved treat for yourself.

The day takes place from 10am – 4pm  at The Museum of The Jewellery Quarter and includes all the materials you need to make your own ring, plus light refreshments. We invite you to bring your own lunch or you are welcome to purchase something in our tea room during the lunch break. Pre booking essential!

Guy Sherwin Short Films, IKON Gallery, Birmingham – 12th February 2019

This event showcases Guy Sherwin’s Optical Sound Films 1971–2007, published by LUX, including works that were shot on the train from London to Birmingham when the artist started teaching at the University of Wolverhampton, then Polytechnic, in the 1970s. The event sheds light on Haroon Mirza’s Tescotrain (Homage to Guy Sherwin) (2012) and An_ Infinato (2009), which includes damaged off-cuts from Guy Sherwin’s 16mm film Cycles #1 (1972/77).

Edwardian Tearooms Late: Valentine Dinner – 14th February 2019

The event is taking place in the Industrial Gallery at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. Wow your valentine with a dinner reservation they won’t be expecting!  For £47.50 per head you can enjoy the delights of a romantic 5 course meal (see link to view the menu). You’ll also be serenaded with live music from Robert Lane to make the evening even more special.

Modern Calligraphy Workshop – 9th February 2019

Heather from Feather & Flourish will be hosting this three hour introduction into modern calligraphy. Heather will cover all the basics of modern calligraphy, including how to use the starter kit which is included in the price of the course. Heather will be on hand throughout the class to answer questions and provide advice.

Valentine’s Wine Dinner, Hotel du Vin, Birmingham – 15th February 2019

The perfect dinner for the Valentine’s weekend. A candlelit dining room at Hotel du Vin, Birmingham’s most romantic destination. Expect fizz and canapés on arrival, a decadent four course banquet and each course served with a glass of Coates & Seely English Sparkling and a glass of Champagne.

Jazz at Second Cup with Percy Pursglove – 20th February 2019

We are very exited to invite Percy to come play at second cup!
Percy Pursglove is a multi-instrumentalist trumpeter, double bassist, educator, improviser and composer, working internationally across a broad spectrum of jazz, contemporary classical and creative musical settings.

Family Baking Day at Sarehole Milll: Pancake Day! – 22nd February 2019

A day of family fun making pancakes! Make sure to pre-book on of the four slots available throughout the day: 11.30-12.15pm, 12.30-1.15pm, 1.45-2.30pm & 2.45-3.00pm. £2 per child.

Whodunnit? A Family Friendly Mystery Trail at Aston Hall – 23rd February 2019

A drop dead fun time travelling mystery trail aimed at families, and those young at heart. Visit the Hall between 11am and 4pm and solve a crime. Interview the suspects and try to solve this most perplexing mystery set in the magnificent surroundings of Aston Hall. Victorian costume is greatly encouraged but not essential. Usual admission charges apply and pre-booking is advisable.

There and Back Again: J.R.R Tolkien and Sarehole Guided Walk – 24th February 2019

A guided introduction to Tolkien, the area of Sarehole and its influence on The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

Starting at Sarehole Mill in the courtyard at 1pm, the tour guides you around some of the highlights of the key areas around Sarehole that influenced Tolkien in his work including Moseley Bog, and back again to Sarehole.

Redditch Resolution Run – 24th February 2019

To raise money for Stroke Association 5 km/10 km/15 km run in the beautiful Arrow Valley Country Park.

Ivy Wild Launch Party, Birmingham – 24th February 2019

Modern Calligraphy Workshop – 16th March

Little Artisan Studio is hosting an introduction workshop to guide you through starting to learn the skills of modern calligraphy. The process will build up your confidence so when you leave, you will have learnt how to use modern calligraphy as a writing style. 

University Symphony Orchestra – 17th March 2019

The Music Society’s Symphony Orchestra perform a programme of music by French composers, including ballet music by Dukas, and the Hungarian March from Berlioz’s epic retelling of the Faust story that captures the extremes of man’s ambition and folly. The Orchestra are joined by joint honours Languages and Music student, Joshua Rapley, for Saint Saëns 1872 Cello Concerto, with Joshua having won the Music Society Soloist Competition in the Autumn.
